Dhammaṭṭhavagga The “Established in Dhamma” Chapter 19. The Just
Vinicchayamahāmattavatthu
Na tena hoti dhammaṭṭho, One is not established in Dhamma You don’t become just
yenatthaṁ sāhasā naye; if one seeks benefit using violence; by passing hasty judgment.
Yo ca atthaṁ anatthañca, a wise person does not wish to have An astute person evaluates both
ubho niccheyya paṇḍito. both benefit and detriment. what is pertinent and what is irrelevant.
Asāhasena dhammena, One who guides others nonviolently, A wise one judges others without haste,
samena nayatī pare; peacefully, in accordance with Dhamma, justly and impartially;
Dhammassa gutto medhāvī, such a wise person is a guardian of the Dhamma that guardian of the law
“dhammaṭṭho”ti pavuccati. and is said to be established in Dhamma. is said to be just.
Chabbaggiyavatthu
Na tena paṇḍito hoti, One is not wise You’re not an astute scholar
yāvatā bahu bhāsati; just because one talks a lot. just because you speak a lot.
Khemī averī abhayo, One who is safe, non-hostile, harmless and fearless One who is secure, free of enmity and fear,
“paṇḍito”ti pavuccati. is said to be wise. is said to be astute.
Ekudānakhīṇāsavavatthu
Na tāvatā dhammadharo, One is not an upholder of the Dhamma You’re not one who has memorized the teaching
yāvatā bahu bhāsati; just because one talks a lot. just because you recite a lot.
Yo ca appampi sutvāna, Even if one has learned little Someone who directly sees the teaching
dhammaṁ kāyena passati; but personally sees the Dhamma, after hearing only a little
Sa ve dhammadharo hoti, then one is an upholder of the Dhamma, is truly one who has memorized the teaching,
yo dhammaṁ nappamajjati. one who does not neglect the Dhamma. for they can never forget it.
Lakuṇḍakabhaddiyattheravatthu
Na tena thero so hoti, One is not an elder You don’t become a senior
yenassa palitaṁ siro; just because one has grey hairs on one's head. by getting some grey hairs;
Paripakko vayo tassa, One is who is decrepit and feeble for one ripe only in age,
“moghajiṇṇo”ti vuccati. is said to be an old fool. is said to have aged in vain.
Yamhi saccañca dhammo ca, But one who is truthful, in accordance with the Dhamma, One who is truthful and principled,
ahiṁsā saṁyamo damo; harmless, self-restrained, trained, harmless, restrained, and self-controlled,
Sa ve vantamalo dhīro, steadfast, and free of all contaminants attentive, purged of stains,
“thero” iti pavuccati. is said to be an elder. is said to be a senior.
Sambahulabhikkhuvatthu
Na vākkaraṇamattena, Not by the quality of their conversation Not by mere enunciation,
vaṇṇapokkharatāya vā; or the beauty of their appearance or a beautiful complexion
Sādhurūpo naro hoti, is a person considered excellent, does a person become holy,
issukī maccharī saṭho. if they are envious, stingy, and deceitful. if they’re jealous, stingy, and devious.
Yassa cetaṁ samucchinnaṁ, One who has shredded, But if they’ve cut that out,
mūlaghaccaṁ samūhataṁ; uprooted, and destroyed those qualities, dug it up at the root, eradicated it,
Sa vantadoso medhāvī, a wise person who has expelled their defects, that wise one, purged of vice,
“sādhurūpo”ti vuccati. is said to be excellent. is said to be holy.
Hatthakavatthu
Na muṇḍakena samaṇo, One is not a contemplative just because one has a shaven head. A liar and breaker of vows is no ascetic
abbato alikaṁ bhaṇaṁ; If one has no religious practices, tells lies, just because they shave their head.
Icchālobhasamāpanno, and is full of desire and greed, How on earth can one be an ascetic
samaṇo kiṁ bhavissati. how can they be a contemplative? who’s full of desire and greed?
Yo ca sameti pāpāni, One who tranquilizes all that is evil, One who stops all wicked deeds,
aṇuṁthūlāni sabbaso; whether minor or major, great and small,
Samitattā hi pāpānaṁ, one who has tranquilized all that is evil because of stopping wicked deeds
“samaṇo”ti pavuccati. is said to be a contemplative. is said to be an ascetic.
Aññatarabrāhmaṇavatthu
Na tena bhikkhu so hoti, One is not a monk You don’t become a mendicant
yāvatā bhikkhate pare; just because one receives almsfood from others. just by begging from others.
Vissaṁ dhammaṁ samādāya, One who takes up a flawed doctrine One who has undertaken domestic duties
bhikkhu hoti na tāvatā. is not a monk. has not yet become a mendicant.
Yodha puññañca pāpañca, One who has discarded both merit and evil, But one living a spiritual life,
bāhetvā brahmacariyavā; lives a spiritual life, who has banished both merit and evil,
Saṅkhāya loke carati, and wanders in the world with careful consideration who wanders having appraised the world,
sa ve “bhikkhū”ti vuccati. is said to be a monk. is said to be a mendicant.
Titthiyavatthu
Na monena munī hoti, One is not a sage if they act like one You don’t become a sage by being sagelike,
mūḷharūpo aviddasu; yet are confused and ignorant. while still confused and ignorant.
Yo ca tulaṁva paggayha, A wise person who carefully weighs their options, The astute one who holds the scales,
varamādāya paṇḍito. chooses the best, taking only the best,
Pāpāni parivajjeti, and completely avoids evil and shunning the bad—
sa munī tena so muni; is a sage; because of this one is a sage. that is a sage, and that is how one becomes a sage.
Yo munāti ubho loke, One who evaluates both of these in the world One who sagely weighs both in the world,
“muni” tena pavuccati. is said to be a sage. is thereby said to be a sage.
Bālisikavatthu
Na tena ariyo hoti, One is not noble You don’t become a noble one
yena pāṇāni hiṁsati; if one harms living beings. by harming living beings.
Ahiṁsā sabbapāṇānaṁ, One who does not harm any living being One harmless towards all living beings
“ariyo”ti pavuccati. is said to be noble. is said to be a noble one.
Sambahulasīlādisampannabhikkhuvatthu
Na sīlabbatamattena, Not just by morality or by spiritual practices Not by precepts and observances,
bāhusaccena vā pana; or by learning a lot nor by much learning,
Atha vā samādhilābhena, or by gaining concentration nor by meditative immersion,
vivittasayanena vā. or by sleeping in seclusion nor by living in seclusion,
Phusāmi nekkhammasukhaṁ, or by experiencing the happiness of renunciation do I experience the bliss of renunciation
aputhujjanasevitaṁ; or by associating with uncommon people not frequented by ordinary people.
Bhikkhu vissāsamāpādi, should a monk be satisfied A mendicant cannot rest confident
appatto āsavakkhayaṁ. as long as one’s defilements have not been eliminated. without attaining the end of defilements.
Dhammaṭṭhavaggo ekūnavīsatimo.
