Malavagga The Contaminant Chapter 18. Stains
Goghātakaputtavatthu
Paṇḍupalāsova dānisi, Now you are like a fallen leaf, Today you’re like a withered leaf,
Yamapurisāpi ca te upaṭṭhitā; and Death's minions are near. Yama’s men await you.
Uyyogamukhe ca tiṭṭhasi, You stand at the starting point of a struggle, You stand at the departure gates,
Pātheyyampi ca te na vijjati. and no provisions can be found for you. yet you have no supplies for the road.
So karohi dīpamattano, Make an island for yourself, Make an island of yourself!
Khippaṁ vāyama paṇḍito bhava; quickly try to become wise; Swiftly strive, learn to be wise!
Niddhantamalo anaṅgaṇo, one who has no contaminants and no flaws Purged of stains, flawless,
Dibbaṁ ariyabhūmiṁ upehisi. will reach the divine state of the noble ones. you’ll go to the heavenly realm of the noble ones.
Upanītavayo ca dānisi, Now you are close to departing; You’ve journeyed the stages of life,
Sampayātosi yamassa santikaṁ; you are in the presence of Death. and now you set out to meet Yama.
Vāso te natthi antarā, You have nowhere to dwell here, Along the way there’s nowhere to stay,
Pātheyyampi ca te na vijjati. and no provisions can be found for you. yet you have no supplies for the road.
So karohi dīpamattano, Make an island for yourself, Make an island of yourself!
Khippaṁ vāyama paṇḍito bhava; quickly try to become wise; Swiftly strive, learn to be wise!
Niddhantamalo anaṅgaṇo, one who has no contaminants and no flaws Purged of stains, flawless,
Na punaṁ jātijaraṁ upehisi. does not come again to birth and death. you’ll not come again to rebirth and old age.
Aññatarabrāhmaṇavatthu
Anupubbena medhāvī, Progressively, A smart person would purge
thokaṁ thokaṁ khaṇe khaṇe; bit by bit, moment after moment, their own stains gradually,
Kammāro rajatasseva, like a smith purifying silver, bit by bit, moment by moment,
niddhame malamattano. the wise remove their contaminants. like a smith smelting silver.
Tissattheravatthu
Ayasāva malaṁ samuṭṭhitaṁ, When rust appears It is the rust born on the iron
Tatuṭṭhāya tameva khādati; it eats away the metal that produced it; that eats away the place it arose.
Evaṁ atidhonacārinaṁ, in the same way, a sanctimonious person And so it is their own deeds
Sāni kammāni nayanti duggatiṁ. is led to a bad destination by their own actions. that lead the overly-ascetic to a bad place.
Lāḷudāyīvatthu
Asajjhāyamalā mantā, Non-repetition contaminates mantras, Not rehearsing is the stain of hymns.
anuṭṭhānamalā gharā; non-upkeep contaminates a house, The stain of houses is neglect.
Malaṁ vaṇṇassa kosajjaṁ, laziness contaminates beauty, Laziness is the stain of beauty.
pamādo rakkhato malaṁ. negligence contaminates security. A guard’s stain is negligence.
Aññatarakulaputtavatthu
Malitthiyā duccaritaṁ, Misconduct contaminates a woman, Misconduct is a woman’s stain.
maccheraṁ dadato malaṁ; stinginess contaminates a donor, A giver’s stain is stinginess.
Malā ve pāpakā dhammā, evil choices contaminate Bad qualities are a stain
asmiṁ loke paramhi ca. both this life and the next. in this world and the next.
Tato malā malataraṁ, There is a contaminant that is even worse than that: But a worse stain than these
avijjā paramaṁ malaṁ; ignorance, the paramount contaminant. is ignorance, the worst stain of all.
Etaṁ malaṁ pahantvāna, Abandon this contaminant Having given up that stain,
nimmalā hotha bhikkhavo. and be free of contaminants, monks! be without stains, mendicants!
Cūḷasāribhikkhuvatthu
Sujīvaṁ ahirikena, It is easy to lose one's conscience, Life is easy for the shameless.
kākasūrena dhaṁsinā; to act like an impudent and offensive crow, With all the rude courage of a crow,
Pakkhandinā pagabbhena, obtrusive and inconsiderate, they live pushy,
saṅkiliṭṭhena jīvitaṁ. living a defiled life. rude, and corrupt.
Hirīmatā ca dujjīvaṁ, It is not easy to maintain one's conscience, Life is hard for the conscientious,
niccaṁ sucigavesinā; always seeking to be impeccable, always seeking purity,
Alīnenāppagabbhena, one who is diligent and considerate, neither clinging nor rude,
suddhājīvena passatā. insightful and living a life of purity. pure of livelihood and discerning.
Pañcaupāsakavatthu
Yo pāṇamatipāteti, One who kills, Take anyone in this world
musāvādañca bhāsati; lies, who kills living creatures,
Loke adinnamādiyati, steals, speaks falsely, steals,
paradārañca gacchati. commits adultery, commits adultery,
Surāmerayapānañca, and drinks alcohol - and indulges in drinking
yo naro anuyuñjati; a person who engages in such activities beer and wine.
Idheva meso lokasmiṁ, right here in this world Right here they dig up
mūlaṁ khaṇati attano. destroys their own foundation. the root of their own self.
Evaṁ bho purisa jānāhi, Therefore, you should know Know this, good fellow:
pāpadhammā asaññatā; that lack of restraint is evil; they are unrestrained and wicked.
Mā taṁ lobho adhammo ca, do not let greed contrary to Dhamma Don’t let that greed and unrighteousness
ciraṁ dukkhāya randhayuṁ. afflict you with long-lasting suffering. inflict pain on you for long.
Tissadaharavatthu
Dadāti ve yathāsaddhaṁ, People give because it brings The people give according to their faith,
yathāpasādanaṁ jano; faith and joy. according to their confidence.
Tattha yo ca maṅku bhavati, One who is disturbed If you get upset over that,
paresaṁ pānabhojane; when food and drink are given to others over other’s food and drink,
Na so divā vā rattiṁ vā, does not gain concentration you’ll not, by day or by night,
samādhimadhigacchati. by day and by night. become immersed in samādhi.
Yassa cetaṁ samucchinnaṁ, One who has shredded, Those who have cut that out,
mūlaghaccaṁ samūhataṁ; destroyed, and uprooted that attitude dug it up at the root, eradicated it,
Sa ve divā vā rattiṁ vā, gains concentration they will, by day or by night,
samādhimadhigacchati. by day and by night. become immersed in samādhi.
Pañcaupāsakavatthu
Natthi rāgasamo aggi, There is no fire as strong as passion, There is no fire like greed,
natthi dosasamo gaho; no grasp as strong as aversion, no crime like hate,
Natthi mohasamaṁ jālaṁ, no trap as strong as delusion, no net like delusion,
natthi taṇhāsamā nadī. no river as strong as craving. no river like craving.
Meṇḍakaseṭṭhivatthu
Sudassaṁ vajjamaññesaṁ, It is easy to see the faults of others, It’s easy to see the faults of others,
attano pana duddasaṁ; and hard to see our own. hard to see one’s own.
Paresaṁ hi so vajjāni, When we frequently expose For the faults of others
opunāti yathā bhusaṁ; the faults of others are tossed high like hay,
Attano pana chādeti, but conceal our own, while one’s own are hidden,
kaliṁva kitavā saṭho. we are like a fraud cheating at dice. as a cheat hides a bad hand.
Ujjhānasaññittheravatthu
Paravajjānupassissa, When one looks at the faults of others When you look for the flaws of others,
niccaṁ ujjhānasaññino; and is always looking to criticize, always finding fault,
Āsavā tassa vaḍḍhanti, one's defilements grow your defilements only grow,
ārā so āsavakkhayā. and one is far the elimination of defilements. you’re far from ending defilements.
Subhaddaparibbājakavatthu
Ākāseva padaṁ natthi, There is no path in the sky, In the atmosphere there is no track,
samaṇo natthi bāhire; there is no contemplative elsewhere. there’s no true ascetic outside here.
Papañcābhiratā pajā, People delight in complication, People enjoy proliferation,
nippapañcā tathāgatā. whereas a Truth-Finder is free of complication. the Realized Ones are free of proliferation.
Ākāseva padaṁ natthi, There is no path in the sky, In the atmosphere there is no track,
samaṇo natthi bāhire; there is no contemplative elsewhere. there’s no true ascetic outside here.
Saṅkhārā sassatā natthi, There is nothing that is eternal, No conditions last forever,
natthi buddhānamiñjitaṁ. and no agitation in Buddhas. the Awakened Ones are not shaken.
Malavaggo aṭṭhārasamo.
