Kodhavagga The Anger Chapter 17. Anger
Rohinīkhattiyakaññāvatthu
Kodhaṁ jahe vippajaheyya mānaṁ, Abandon anger, discard conceit, Give up anger, get rid of conceit,
Saṁyojanaṁ sabbamatikkameyya; completely transcend the fetter; and escape every fetter.
Taṁ nāmarūpasmimasajjamānaṁ, Not adhering to mind and body, Sufferings don’t befall one who has nothing,
Akiñcanaṁ nānupatanti dukkhā. possessing nothing, one does not fall into suffering. not clinging to name and form.
Aññatarabhikkhuvatthu
Yo ve uppatitaṁ kodhaṁ, When anger arises, When anger surges like a lurching chariot,
rathaṁ bhantaṁva vāraye; one who stops it like a runaway cart - keep it in check.
Tamahaṁ sārathiṁ brūmi, That is the one I call a charioteer; That’s what I call a charioteer;
rasmiggāho itaro jano. other people just hold the reins. others just hold the reins.
Uttarāupāsikavatthu
Akkodhena jine kodhaṁ, By means of non-anger one defeats anger, Defeat anger with kindness,
asādhuṁ sādhunā jine; by means of excellence one defeats non-excellence, villainy with virtue,
Jine kadariyaṁ dānena, by means of generosity one defeats stinginess, stinginess with giving,
saccenālikavādinaṁ. by means of truth one defeats lies. and lies with truth.
Mahāmoggallānapañhavatthu
Saccaṁ bhaṇe na kujjheyya, Speak the truth, do not get angry, Speak the truth, do not be angry,
dajjā appampi yācito; and give - even just a little bit - when asked; and give when asked, if only a little.
Etehi tīhi ṭhānehi, by means of these three things By these three means,
gacche devāna santike. you will enter the presence of the angels. you may enter the presence of the gods.
Buddhapitubrāhmaṇavatthu
Ahiṁsakā ye munayo, Those sages who are harmless, Those harmless sages,
niccaṁ kāyena saṁvutā; who are always physically restrained, always restrained in body,
Te yanti accutaṁ ṭhānaṁ, go to the undying state go to the state that does not pass,
yattha gantvā na socare. where they do not sorrow. where there is no sorrow.
Puṇṇadāsīvatthu
Sadā jāgaramānānaṁ, When one is always wakeful, Always wakeful,
ahorattānusikkhinaṁ; training day and night, practicing night and day,
Nibbānaṁ adhimuttānaṁ, and intent upon Nibbāna, focused only on extinguishment,
atthaṁ gacchanti āsavā. their defilements disappear. their defilements come to an end.
Atulaupāsakavatthu
Porāṇametaṁ atula, This is an incomparably ancient truth, It’s always been this way, Atula,
netaṁ ajjatanāmiva; not just the way it is today: it’s not just today.
Nindanti tuṇhimāsīnaṁ, they criticize those who are silent, They blame you when you’re silent,
nindanti bahubhāṇinaṁ; they criticize those who speak a lot, they blame you when you speak a lot,
Mitabhāṇimpi nindanti, they criticize those who speak moderately; and even when you speak just right:
natthi loke anindito. there is no one in the world who is not criticized. no-one in the world escapes blame.
Na cāhu na ca bhavissati, It has not been, it will not be, There never was, nor will be,
na cetarahi vijjati; and it is not now the case nor is there today,
Ekantaṁ nindito poso, that anyone is exclusively criticized someone who is wholly praised
ekantaṁ vā pasaṁsito. or exclusively praised. or wholly blamed.
Yañce viññū pasaṁsanti, The discerning praise one who, If, after watching them day in day out,
anuvicca suve suve; when observed day after day, discerning people praise
Acchiddavuttiṁ medhāviṁ, is known to have impeccable conduct, intelligence, that sage of impeccable conduct,
paññāsīlasamāhitaṁ. wisdom, morality, and concentration. endowed with ethics and wisdom;
Nikkhaṁ jambonadasseva, Such a person is like a gold coin - like a pendant of Black Plum River gold,
ko taṁ ninditumarahati; who would be worthy to criticize them? who is worthy to criticize them?
Devāpi naṁ pasaṁsanti, Even the angels praise such a person; Even the gods praise them,
brahmunāpi pasaṁsito. even Brahmā praises such a person. and by the Divinity, too, they’re praised.
Chabbaggiyavatthu
Kāyappakopaṁ rakkheyya, Protect yourself from manifesting anger physically; Guard against ill-tempered deeds,
kāyena saṁvuto siyā; practice physical self-restraint. be restrained in body.
Kāyaduccaritaṁ hitvā, Having relinquished physical misconduct, Giving up bad bodily conduct,
kāyena sucaritaṁ care. practice good conduct with the body. conduct yourself well in body.
Vacīpakopaṁ rakkheyya, Protect yourself from manifesting anger verbally; Guard against ill-tempered words,
vācāya saṁvuto siyā; practice verbal self-restraint. be restrained in speech.
Vacīduccaritaṁ hitvā, Having relinquished verbal misconduct, Giving up bad verbal conduct,
vācāya sucaritaṁ care. practice good conduct with speech. conduct yourself well in speech.
Manopakopaṁ rakkheyya, Protect yourself from manifesting anger mentally; Guard against ill-tempered thoughts,
manasā saṁvuto siyā; practice mental self-restraint. be restrained in mind.
Manoduccaritaṁ hitvā, Having relinquished mental misconduct, Giving up bad mental conduct,
manasā sucaritaṁ care. practice good conduct with the mind. conduct yourself well in mind.
Kāyena saṁvutā dhīrā, The steadfast are self-restrained physically, An attentive one is restrained in body
atho vācāya saṁvutā; verbally, restrained also in speech,
Manasā saṁvutā dhīrā, and mentally; in thought, too, they are restrained:
te ve suparisaṁvutā. they are well-restrained in every way. they are restrained in every way.
Kodhavaggo sattarasamo.
