Atha kho ÄyasmÄ puį¹į¹iyo yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kami; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavantaį¹ abhivÄdetvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«di. Ekamantaį¹ nisinno kho ÄyasmÄ puį¹į¹iyo bhagavantaį¹ etadavoca: Then Venerable Puį¹į¹iya went up to the Buddha, bowed, sat down to one side, and said to him:
āko nu kho, bhante, hetu ko paccayo yena appekadÄ tathÄgataį¹ dhammadesanÄ paį¹ibhÄti, appekadÄ na paį¹ibhÄtÄ«āti? āSir, what is the cause, what is the reason why sometimes the Realized One feels inspired to teach, and other times not?ā
āSaddho ca, puį¹į¹iya, bhikkhu hoti, no cupasaį¹
kamitÄ; āPuį¹į¹iya, when a mendicant has faith but doesnāt approach,
neva tathÄgataį¹ dhammadesanÄ paį¹ibhÄti. the Realized One doesnāt feel inspired to teach.
Yato ca kho, puį¹į¹iya, bhikkhu saddho ca hoti, upasaį¹
kamitÄ ca; But when a mendicant has faith and approaches,
evaį¹ tathÄgataį¹ dhammadesanÄ paį¹ibhÄti. the Realized One feels inspired to teach.
Saddho ca, puį¹į¹iya, bhikkhu hoti, upasaį¹
kamitÄ ca, no ca payirupÄsitÄ ā¦pe⦠When a mendicant has faith and approaches, but doesnāt pay homage ā¦
payirupÄsitÄ ca, no ca paripucchitÄ ā¦ they pay homage, but donāt ask questions ā¦
paripucchitÄ ca, no ca ohitasoto dhammaį¹ suį¹Äti ⦠they ask questions, but donāt actively listen to the teaching ā¦
ohitasoto ca dhammaį¹ suį¹Äti, no ca sutvÄ dhammaį¹ dhÄreti ⦠they actively listen to the teaching, but donāt remember the teaching theyāve heard ā¦
sutvÄ ca dhammaį¹ dhÄreti, no ca dhÄtÄnaį¹ dhammÄnaį¹ atthaį¹ upaparikkhati ⦠they remember the teaching theyāve heard, but donāt examine the meaning of the teachings theyāve remembered ā¦
dhÄtÄnaƱca dhammÄnaį¹ atthaį¹ upaparikkhati, no ca atthamaƱƱÄya dhammamaƱƱÄya dhammÄnudhammappaį¹ipanno hoti. they examine the meaning of the teachings theyāve remembered, but, not having understood the meaning and the teaching, they donāt practice in line with the principle of the teaching.
Neva tÄva tathÄgataį¹ dhammadesanÄ paį¹ibhÄti. The Realized One doesnāt feel inspired to teach.
Yato ca kho, puį¹į¹iya, bhikkhu saddho ca hoti, upasaį¹
kamitÄ ca, payirupÄsitÄ ca, paripucchitÄ ca, ohitasoto ca dhammaį¹ suį¹Äti, sutvÄ ca dhammaį¹ dhÄreti, dhÄtÄnaƱca dhammÄnaį¹ atthaį¹ upaparikkhati, atthamaƱƱÄya dhammamaƱƱÄya dhammÄnudhammappaį¹ipanno ca hoti; But when a mendicant has faith, approaches, pays homage, asks questions, actively listens to the teachings, remembers the teachings, examines the meaning, and practices in line with the principle of the teaching,
evaį¹ tathÄgataį¹ dhammadesanÄ paį¹ibhÄti. the Realized One feels inspired to teach.
Imehi kho, puį¹į¹iya, aį¹į¹hahi dhammehi samannÄgatÄ ekantapaį¹ibhÄnÄ tathÄgataį¹ dhammadesanÄ hotÄ«āti. When someone possesses these eight qualities, the Realized One feels totally inspired to teach.ā
