Yathābhatasutta Cast Down

ā€œPaƱcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye. ā€œMendicants, a mendicant with five qualities is cast down to hell.

Katamehi paƱcahi? What five?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu assaddho hoti, ahiriko hoti, anottappÄ« hoti, kusÄ«to hoti, duppaƱƱo hoti. It’s when a mendicant is faithless, shameless, imprudent, lazy, and witless.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, pañcahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ niraye. A mendicant with these five qualities is cast down to hell.

Pañcahi, bhikkhave, dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ sagge. A mendicant with five qualities is raised up to heaven.

Katamehi paƱcahi? What five?

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu saddho hoti, hirÄ«mā hoti, ottappÄ« hoti, āraddhavÄ«riyo hoti, paƱƱavā hoti. It’s when a mendicant is faithful, conscientious, prudent, energetic, and wise.

Imehi kho, bhikkhave, paƱcahi dhammehi samannāgato bhikkhu yathābhataṁ nikkhitto evaṁ saggeā€ti. A mendicant with these five qualities is raised up to heaven.ā€
