Sikkhāpadasutta Training Rules

ā€œCattārome, bhikkhave, puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasmiṁ. ā€œMendicants, these four individuals are found in the world.

Katame cattāro? What four?

attahitāya paṭipanno no parahitāya, One who practices to benefit themselves, but not others;

parahitāya paṭipanno no attahitāya, one who practices to benefit others, but not themselves;

nevattahitāya paṭipanno no parahitāya, one who practices to benefit neither themselves nor others; and

attahitāya ceva paṭipanno parahitāya ca. one who practices to benefit both themselves and others.

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo attahitāya paṭipanno hoti, no parahitāya? And how does an individual practice to benefit themselves, but not others?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo attanā pāṇātipātā paį¹­ivirato hoti, no paraṁ pāṇātipātā veramaṇiyā samādapeti; It’s when an individual doesn’t kill living creatures, steal, commit sexual misconduct, lie, or consume beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants. But they don’t encourage others to do the same.

attanā adinnādānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, no paraṁ adinnādānā veramaṇiyā samādapeti;

attanā kāmesumicchācārā paį¹­ivirato hoti, no paraṁ kāmesumicchācārā veramaṇiyā samādapeti;

attanā musāvādā paį¹­ivirato hoti, no paraṁ musāvādā veramaṇiyā samādapeti;

attanā surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānā paį¹­ivirato hoti, no paraṁ surāmerayamajjapamādaį¹­į¹­hānā veramaṇiyā samādapeti.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo attahitāya paį¹­ipanno hoti, no parahitāya. That’s how an individual practices to benefit themselves, but not others.

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo parahitāya paṭipanno hoti, no attahitāya? And how does an individual practice to benefit others, but not themselves?

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco puggalo attanā pāṇātipātā appaį¹­ivirato hoti, paraṁ pāṇātipātā veramaṇiyā samādapeti; It’s when an individual kills living creatures, steals, commits sexual misconduct, lies, and consumes beer, wine, and liquor intoxicants. But they encourage others to not do these things.

Kathañca, bhikkhave, puggalo nevattahitāya paṭipanno hoti no parahitāya? And how does a person practice to benefit neither themselves nor others?

It’s when an individual doesn’t kill, etc. … and encourages others to do the same.

Evaṁ kho, bhikkhave, puggalo attahitāya ceva paį¹­ipanno hoti parahitāya ca. That’s how an individual practices to benefit both themselves and others.

Ime kho, bhikkhave, cattāro puggalā santo saṁvijjamānā lokasminā€ti. These are the four individuals found in the world.ā€
