Atha kho dve brÄhmaį¹Ä jiį¹į¹Ä vuddhÄ mahallakÄ addhagatÄ vayoanuppattÄ vÄ«savassasatikÄ jÄtiyÄ yena bhagavÄ tenupasaį¹
kamiį¹su; upasaį¹
kamitvÄ bhagavatÄ saddhiį¹ sammodiį¹su. On one occasion the Blessed One was staying near SÄvatthÄ« in Jetaās Grove, AnÄthapiį¹įøikaās monastery. Then two brahmansāfeeble old men, aged, advanced in years, having come to the last stage of life, 120 years oldāwent to the Blessed One. On arrival, they exchanged courteous greetings with him Then two old brahminsāelderly and senior, who were advanced in years and had reached the final stage of life, a hundred and twenty years oldāwent up to the Buddha, and exchanged greetings with him.
SammodanÄ«yaį¹ kathaį¹ sÄraį¹Ä«yaį¹ vÄ«tisÄretvÄ ekamantaį¹ nisÄ«diį¹su. Ekamantaį¹ nisinnÄ kho te brÄhmaį¹Ä bhagavantaį¹ etadavocuį¹: and, after an exchange of friendly greetings & courtesies, sat to one side. As they were sitting there, they said to him: When the greetings and polite conversation were over, they sat down to one side, and said to the Buddha:
āmayamassu, bho gotama, brÄhmaį¹Ä jiį¹į¹Ä vuddhÄ mahallakÄ addhagatÄ vayoanuppattÄ vÄ«savassasatikÄ jÄtiyÄ; āMaster Gotama, we are brahmansāfeeble old men, aged, advanced in years, having come to the last stage of life, 120 years old. āWe brahmins, worthy Gotama, are old, elderly and senior, weāre advanced in years and have reached the final stage of life; weāre a hundred and twenty years old.
te camhÄ akatakalyÄį¹Ä akatakusalÄ akatabhÄ«ruttÄį¹Ä. And we have done no admirable deeds, no skillful deeds, no deeds that allay our fears. And we havenāt done what is good and skillful, nor have we made a shelter from fear.
Ovadatu no bhavaį¹ gotamo, anusÄsatu no bhavaį¹ gotamo yaį¹ amhÄkaį¹ assa dÄ«gharattaį¹ hitÄya sukhÄyÄāti. Teach us, Master Gotama. Instruct us, Master Gotama, for our long-term benefit & happiness.ā Advise us, worthy Gotama, instruct us! It will be for our lasting welfare and happiness.ā
āTaggha tumhe, brÄhmaį¹Ä, jiį¹į¹Ä vuddhÄ mahallakÄ addhagatÄ vayoanuppattÄ vÄ«savassasatikÄ jÄtiyÄ; āIndeed, brahmans, you are feeble old men, aged, advanced in years, having come to the last stage of life, 120 years old. āIndeed, brahmins, youāre old, elderly and senior.
te cattha akatakalyÄį¹Ä akatakusalÄ akatabhÄ«ruttÄį¹Ä. And you have done no admirable deeds, no skillful deeds, no deeds that allay your fears. And you havenāt done what is good and skillful, nor have you made a shelter from fear.
UpanÄ«yati kho ayaį¹, brÄhmaį¹Ä, loko jarÄya byÄdhinÄ maraį¹ena. This world is swept away by aging, by illness, by death. This world is led onward by old age, sickness, and death.
Evaį¹ upanÄ«yamÄne kho, brÄhmaį¹Ä, loke jarÄya byÄdhinÄ maraį¹ena, yo idha kÄyena saį¹yamo vÄcÄya saį¹yamo manasÄ saį¹yamo, taį¹ tassa petassa tÄį¹aƱca leį¹aƱca dÄ«paƱca saraį¹aƱca parÄyaį¹aƱcÄti. With the world thus swept away by aging, illness, & death, any restraint of body, speech, & intellect practiced here will be oneās shelter, cave, island, & refuge after death in the world beyond.ā But restraint here by way of body, speech, and mind is the shelter, asylum, island, refuge, and final haven for the departed.
UpanÄ«yati jÄ«vitamappamÄyu, Itās swept along: life, its next-to-nothing span. This life, so very short, is led onward.
JarÅ«panÄ«tassa na santi tÄį¹Ä; For one swept on by aging no shelters exist. One led on to old age has no shelter.
Etaį¹ bhayaį¹ maraį¹e pekkhamÄno, Keeping sight of this danger in death, Seeing this peril in death,
PuƱƱÄni kayirÄtha sukhÄvahÄni. do merit-deeds that bring bliss. do good deeds that bring you joy.
Yodha kÄyena saį¹yamo, When youāre restrained here The restraint practiced hereā
VÄcÄya uda cetasÄ; in body, speech, & awareness; of body, speech, and mindā
Taį¹ tassa petassa sukhÄya hoti, when you make merit while still alive: leads the departed to happiness,
