āTayome, bhikkhave, puggalÄ santo saį¹vijjamÄnÄ lokasmiį¹. āThese three individuals are found in the world.

Atthi, bhikkhave, puggalo jigucchitabbo na sevitabbo na bhajitabbo na payirupÄsitabbo. There is an individual you should be disgusted by, and you shouldnāt associate with, accompany, or attend them.
Atthi, bhikkhave, puggalo ajjhupekkhitabbo na sevitabbo na bhajitabbo na payirupÄsitabbo. There is an individual you should regard with equanimity, and you shouldnāt associate with, accompany, or attend them.
Atthi, bhikkhave, puggalo sevitabbo bhajitabbo payirupÄsitabbo. There is an individual you should associate with, accompany, and attend.

kassarasamÄcÄro paį¹icchannakammanto, assamaį¹o samaį¹apaį¹iƱƱo, abrahmacÄrÄ« brahmacÄripaį¹iƱƱo, antopÅ«ti avassuto kasambujÄto. Itās an individual who is unethical, of bad qualities, filthy, with suspicious behavior, underhand, no true ascetic or spiritual practitionerāthough claiming to be oneārotten inside, festering, and depraved.
EvarÅ«po, bhikkhave, puggalo jigucchitabbo na sevitabbo na bhajitabbo na payirupÄsitabbo. You should be disgusted by such an individual, and you shouldnāt associate with, accompany, or attend them.

KiƱcÄpi, bhikkhave, evarÅ«passa puggalassa na diį¹į¹hÄnugatiį¹ Äpajjati, atha kho naį¹ pÄpako kittisaddo abbhuggacchati: Even if you donāt follow the example of such an individual, you still get a bad reputation:
āpÄpamitto purisapuggalo pÄpasahÄyo pÄpasampavaį¹
koāti. āThat individual has bad friends, companions, and associates.ā
SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, ahi gÅ«thagato kiƱcÄpi na daį¹sati, atha kho naį¹ makkheti; Theyāre like a snake thatās been living in a pile of dung. Even if it doesnāt bite, itāll still rub off on you.
evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, kiƱcÄpi evarÅ«passa puggalassa na diį¹į¹hÄnugatiį¹ Äpajjati, atha kho naį¹ pÄpako kittisaddo abbhuggacchati: In the same way, even if you donāt follow the example of such an individual, you still get a bad reputation:
āpÄpamitto purisapuggalo pÄpasahÄyo pÄpasampavaį¹
koāti. āThat individual has bad friends, companions, and associates.ā

appampi vutto samÄno abhisajjati kuppati byÄpajjati patitthÄ«yati, kopaƱca dosaƱca appaccayaƱca pÄtukaroti. Even when lightly criticized they lose their temper, becoming annoyed, hostile, and hard-hearted, and they display annoyance, hate, and bitterness.
SeyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, duį¹į¹hÄruko kaį¹į¹hena vÄ kaį¹halÄya vÄ ghaį¹į¹ito bhiyyoso mattÄya Äsavaį¹ deti; Theyāre like a festering sore, which, when you hit it with a stick or a stone, discharges even more.
evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave ā¦pe⦠In the same way, someone is irritable and bad-tempered.
seyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, tindukÄlÄtaį¹ kaį¹į¹hena vÄ kaį¹halÄya vÄ ghaį¹į¹itaį¹ bhiyyoso mattÄya cicciį¹Äyati ciį¹iciį¹Äyati; Theyāre like a firebrand of pale-moon ebony, which, when you hit it with a stick or a stone, sizzles and crackles even more.
evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave ā¦pe⦠In the same way, someone is irritable and bad-tempered.
seyyathÄpi, bhikkhave, gÅ«thakÅ«po kaį¹į¹hena vÄ kaį¹halÄya vÄ ghaį¹į¹ito bhiyyoso mattÄya duggandho hoti; Theyāre like a sewer, which, when you stir it with a stick or a stone, stinks even more.
evamevaį¹ kho, bhikkhave, idhekacco puggalo kodhano hoti upÄyÄsabahulo, In the same way, an individual is irritable and bad-tempered.

Na ca hÄyetha kadÄci tulyasevÄ«; but associating with an equal, youāll never decline;
Seį¹į¹hamupanamaį¹ udeti khippaį¹, following the best, youāll quickly rise up,
TasmÄ attano uttariį¹ bhajethÄāti. so you should keep company with people better than you.ā
