Sāraṇīyasutta To Be Remembered Commemoration

ā€œTīṇimāni, bhikkhave, raƱƱo khattiyassa muddhāvasittassa yāvajÄ«vaṁ sāraṇīyāni bhavanti. ā€œMonks, these three things are to be remembered by a head-anointed noble-warrior king throughout life. ā€œAn anointed aristocratic king should commemorate three places as long as he lives.

Katamāni tīṇi? Which three? What three?

Yasmiṁ, bhikkhave, padese rājā khattiyo muddhāvasitto jāto hoti. ā€œThe place where he was born: The place he was born.

Idaṁ, bhikkhave, paį¹­hamaṁ raƱƱo khattiyassa muddhāvasittassa yāvajÄ«vaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ hoti. This is the first thing that is to be remembered by a head-anointed noble-warrior king throughout life. This is the first place.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, yasmiṁ padese rājā khattiyo muddhāvasitto hoti. ā€œThen again, the place where he was head-anointed as a noble-warrior king: The place he was anointed as king.

Idaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyaṁ raƱƱo khattiyassa muddhāvasittassa yāvajÄ«vaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ hoti. This is the second thing that is to be remembered by a head-anointed noble-warrior king throughout life. This is the second place.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, yasmiṁ padese rājā khattiyo muddhāvasitto saį¹…gāmaṁ abhivijinitvā vijitasaį¹…gāmo tameva saį¹…gāmasÄ«saṁ ajjhāvasati. ā€œThen again, the place where, having won the battle, he then emerged victorious and ruled at the head of the battle: The place where he won victory in battle, establishing himself as foremost in battle.

Idaṁ, bhikkhave, tatiyaṁ raƱƱo khattiyassa muddhāvasittassa yāvajÄ«vaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ hoti. This is the third thing that is to be remembered by a head-anointed noble-warrior king throughout life. This is the third place.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi raƱƱo khattiyassa muddhāvasittassa yāvajÄ«vaṁ sāraṇīyāni bhavanti. ā€œThese, monks, are the three things to be remembered by a head-anointed noble-warrior king throughout life. These are the three places an anointed king should commemorate as long as he lives.

Evamevaṁ kho, bhikkhave, tīṇimāni bhikkhussa yāvajÄ«vaṁ sāraṇīyāni bhavanti. ā€œIn the same way, these three things are to be remembered by a monk throughout life. In the same way, a mendicant should commemorate three places as long as they live.

Katamāni tīṇi? Which three? What three?

Yasmiṁ, bhikkhave, padese bhikkhu kesamassuṁ ohāretvā kāsāyāni vatthāni acchādetvā agārasmā anagāriyaṁ pabbajito hoti. ā€œThe place where, shaving off his hair & beard, clothing himself in the ochre robe, he goes forth from the home life into homelessness: The place where the mendicant shaved off their hair and beard, dressed in ocher robes, and went forth from the lay life to homelessness.

Idaṁ, bhikkhave, paį¹­hamaṁ bhikkhussa yāvajÄ«vaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ hoti. This is the first thing that is to be remembered by a monk throughout life. This is the first place.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, yasmiṁ padese bhikkhu ā€˜idaṁ dukkhan’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ pajānāti, ā€˜ayaṁ dukkhasamudayo’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ pajānāti, ā€˜ayaṁ dukkhanirodho’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ pajānāti, ā€˜ayaṁ dukkhanirodhagāminÄ« paį¹­ipadā’ti yathābhÅ«taṁ pajānāti. ā€œThen again, the place where he discerns, as it has come to be, ā€˜This is stress’ … ā€˜This is the origination of stress’ … ā€˜This is the cessation of stress’ … ā€˜This is the path of practice leading to the cessation of stress’: This is a standard way of indicating that he has become at least a stream-winner but not yet an arahant. See SN 48:53.The place where the mendicant truly understands: ā€˜This is suffering’ … ā€˜This is the origin of suffering’ … ā€˜This is the cessation of suffering’ … ā€˜This is the practice that leads to the cessation of suffering’.

Idaṁ, bhikkhave, dutiyaṁ bhikkhussa yāvajÄ«vaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ hoti. This is the second thing that is to be remembered by a monk throughout life. This is the second place.

Puna caparaṁ, bhikkhave, yasmiṁ padese bhikkhu āsavānaṁ khayā anāsavaṁ cetovimuttiṁ paƱƱāvimuttiṁ diį¹­į¹­heva dhamme sayaṁ abhiƱƱā sacchikatvā upasampajja viharati. ā€œThen again, the place where, through the ending of effluents, he enters & remains in the effluent-free awareness-release & discernment-release, directly knowing & realizing it for himself right in the here-&-now: The place where the mendicant realizes the undefiled freedom of heart and freedom by wisdom. And they live having realized it with their own insight in this very life due to the ending of defilements.

Idaṁ, bhikkhave, tatiyaṁ bhikkhussa yāvajÄ«vaṁ sāraṇīyaṁ hoti. This is the third thing that is to be remembered by a monk throughout life. This is the third place.

Imāni kho, bhikkhave, tīṇi bhikkhussa yāvajÄ«vaṁ sāraṇīyāni bhavantÄ«ā€ti. ā€œThese, monks, are the three things to be remembered by a monk throughout life.ā€ These are the three places a mendicant should commemorate as long as they live.ā€
