ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yena anuppannā vā kusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā vā akusalā dhammā parihāyanti yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, kalyāṇamittatā. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that gives rise to skillful qualities, or makes unskillful qualities decline like good friends.

Kalyāṇamittassa, bhikkhave, anuppannā ceva kusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca akusalā dhammā parihāyantÄ«ā€ti. When you have good friends, skillful qualities arise and unskillful qualities decline.ā€

Paṭhamaṁ.

ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yena anuppannā vā akusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā vā kusalā dhammā parihāyanti yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, anuyogo akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ, ananuyogo kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that gives rise to unskillful qualities, or makes skillful qualities decline like pursuing bad habits and not good habits.

Anuyogā, bhikkhave, akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ, ananuyogā kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ anuppannā ceva akusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca kusalā dhammā parihāyantÄ«ā€ti. When you pursue bad habits and not good habits, unskillful qualities arise and skillful qualities decline.ā€

Dutiyaṁ.

Anuyogā, bhikkhave, kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ, ananuyogā akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ anuppannā ceva kusalā dhammā uppajjanti uppannā ca akusalā dhammā parihāyantÄ«ā€ti. When you pursue good habits and not bad habits, skillful qualities arise and unskillful qualities decline.ā€

Tatiyaṁ.

ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yena anuppannā vā bojjhaį¹…gā nuppajjanti uppannā vā bojjhaį¹…gā na bhāvanāpāripÅ«riṁ gacchanti yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, ayonisomanasikāro. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that prevents the awakening factors from arising, or, if they’ve already arisen, prevents them from being fully developed like irrational application of mind.

Ayoniso, bhikkhave, manasi karoto anuppannā ceva bojjhaį¹…gā nuppajjanti uppannā ca bojjhaį¹…gā na bhāvanāpāripÅ«riṁ gacchantÄ«ā€ti. When you apply the mind irrationally, the awakening factors don’t arise, or, if they’ve already arisen, they’re not fully developed.ā€

Catutthaṁ.

Yoniso, bhikkhave, manasi karoto anuppannā ceva bojjhaį¹…gā uppajjanti uppannā ca bojjhaį¹…gā bhāvanāpāripÅ«riṁ gacchantÄ«ā€ti. When you apply the mind rationally, the awakening factors arise, or, if they’ve already arisen, they’re fully developed.ā€

Pañcamaṁ.

ā€œAppamattikā esā, bhikkhave, parihāni yadidaṁ Ʊātiparihāni. ā€œNext to nothing, monks, is loss of relatives. ā€œLoss of relatives, mendicants, is a small thing.

Etaṁ patikiį¹­į¹­haṁ, bhikkhave, parihānÄ«naṁ yadidaṁ paƱƱāparihānÄ«ā€ti. This is the worst loss: loss of discernment.ā€ Wisdom is the worst thing to lose.ā€

Chaṭṭhaṁ.

ā€œAppamattikā esā, bhikkhave, vuddhi yadidaṁ Ʊātivuddhi. ā€œNext to nothing, monks, is increase in relatives. ā€œGrowth of relatives, mendicants, is a small thing.

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, vuddhīnaṁ yadidaṁ paññāvuddhi. This is the foremost increase: increase in discernment. Wisdom is the best thing to grow.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṁ sikkhitabbaṁ: Therefore, monks, you should train yourselves: So you should train like this:

ā€˜paƱƱāvuddhiyā vaddhissāmā’ti. ā€˜We will grow in the increase of discernment.’ ā€˜We will grow in wisdom.’

EvaƱhi vo, bhikkhave, sikkhitabbanā€ti. That’s how you should train yourselves.ā€ That’s how you should train.ā€

Sattamaṁ.

ā€œAppamattikā esā, bhikkhave, parihāni yadidaṁ bhogaparihāni. ā€œNext to nothing, monks, is loss of wealth. ā€œLoss of wealth, mendicants, is a small thing.

Etaṁ patikiį¹­į¹­haṁ, bhikkhave, parihānÄ«naṁ yadidaṁ paƱƱāparihānÄ«ā€ti. This is the worst loss: loss of discernment.ā€ Wisdom is the worst thing to lose.ā€

Aṭṭhamaṁ.

Etaṁ patikiį¹­į¹­haṁ, bhikkhave, parihānÄ«naṁ yadidaṁ paƱƱāparihānÄ«ā€ti. This is the worst loss: loss of discernment.ā€ Wisdom is the worst thing to lose.ā€

Dasamaṁ.

ā€œAppamattikā esā, bhikkhave, vuddhi yadidaṁ yasovuddhi. ā€œNext to nothing, monks, is increase in status. ā€œGrowth of fame, mendicants, is a small thing.

Etadaggaṁ, bhikkhave, vuddhīnaṁ yadidaṁ paññāvuddhi. This is the foremost increase: increase in discernment. Wisdom is the best thing to grow.
