ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ adantaṁ mahato anatthāya saṁvattati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, cittaṁ. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that is so very harmful as this mind that is not tamed.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, adantaṁ mahato anatthāya saṁvattatÄ«ā€ti. An untamed mind is very harmful.ā€

Paṭhamaṁ.

ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ dantaṁ mahato atthāya saṁvattati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, cittaṁ. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that is so very beneficial as this mind that is tamed.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, dantaṁ mahato atthāya saṁvattatÄ«ā€ti. A tamed mind is very beneficial.ā€

Dutiyaṁ.

ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ aguttaṁ mahato anatthāya saṁvattati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, cittaṁ. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that is so very harmful as this mind that is not guarded.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, aguttaṁ mahato anatthāya saṁvattatÄ«ā€ti. An unguarded mind is very harmful.ā€

Tatiyaṁ.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, guttaṁ mahato atthāya saṁvattatÄ«ā€ti. A guarded mind is very beneficial.ā€

Catutthaṁ.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, arakkhitaṁ mahato anatthāya saṁvattatÄ«ā€ti. An unprotected mind is very harmful.ā€

Pañcamaṁ.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, rakkhitaṁ mahato atthāya saṁvattatÄ«ā€ti. A protected mind is very beneficial.ā€

Chaṭṭhaṁ.

ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ asaṁvutaṁ mahato anatthāya saṁvattati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, cittaṁ. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that is so very harmful as this mind that is not restrained.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, asaṁvutaṁ mahato anatthāya saṁvattatÄ«ā€ti. An unrestrained mind is very harmful.ā€

Sattamaṁ.

ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ saṁvutaṁ mahato atthāya saṁvattati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, cittaṁ. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that is so very beneficial as this mind that is restrained.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, saṁvutaṁ mahato atthāya saṁvattatÄ«ā€ti. A restrained mind is very beneficial.ā€

Aṭṭhamaṁ.

ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ adantaṁ aguttaṁ arakkhitaṁ asaṁvutaṁ mahato anatthāya saṁvattati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, cittaṁ. ā€œI don’t envision a single thing that—when untamed, unguarded, unprotected, unrestrained—leads to such great harm as the mind. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that is so very harmful as this mind that is not tamed, guarded, protected, and restrained.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, adantaṁ aguttaṁ arakkhitaṁ asaṁvutaṁ mahato anatthāya saṁvattatÄ«ā€ti. The mind—when untamed, unguarded, unprotected, unrestrained—leads to great harm.ā€ An untamed, unguarded, unprotected, and unrestrained mind is very harmful.ā€

Navamaṁ.

ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ dantaṁ guttaṁ rakkhitaṁ saṁvutaṁ mahato atthāya saṁvattati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, cittaṁ. ā€œI don’t envision a single thing that—when tamed, guarded, protected, restrained—leads to such great benefit as the mind. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that is so very beneficial as this mind that is tamed, guarded, protected, and restrained.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, dantaṁ guttaṁ rakkhitaṁ saṁvutaṁ mahato atthāya saṁvattatÄ«ā€ti. The mind—when tamed, guarded, protected, restrained—leads to great benefit.ā€ A tamed, guarded, protected, and restrained mind is very beneficial.ā€
