3. Akammaniyavagga 3. Useless The Chapter on the Unworkable

ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ abhāvitaṁ akammaniyaṁ hoti yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, cittaṁ. ā€œI don’t envision a single thing that, when undeveloped, is as unpliant as the mind. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that is so unworkable as this mind that is not developed.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, abhāvitaṁ akammaniyaṁ hotÄ«ā€ti. The mind, when undeveloped, is unpliant.ā€ An undeveloped mind is unworkable.ā€

Paṭhamaṁ.

ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ bhāvitaṁ kammaniyaṁ hoti yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, cittaṁ. ā€œI don’t envision a single thing that, when developed, is as pliant as the mind. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that is so workable as this mind that is developed

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, bhāvitaṁ kammaniyaṁ hotÄ«ā€ti. The mind, when developed, is pliant.ā€ A developed mind is workable.ā€

Dutiyaṁ.

ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ abhāvitaṁ mahato anatthāya saṁvattati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, cittaṁ. ā€œI don’t envision a single thing that, when undeveloped, leads to such great harm as the mind. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that is so very harmful as this mind that is not developed.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, abhāvitaṁ mahato anatthāya saṁvattatÄ«ā€ti. The mind, when undeveloped, leads to great harm.ā€ An undeveloped mind is very harmful.ā€

Tatiyaṁ.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, abhāvitaṁ apātubhÅ«taṁ mahato anatthāya saṁvattatÄ«ā€ti. The mind, when undeveloped & unapparent, leads to great harm.ā€ An undeveloped and unmanifested mind is very harmful.ā€

Pañcamaṁ.

ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ bhāvitaṁ pātubhÅ«taṁ mahato atthāya saṁvattati yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, cittaṁ. ā€œI don’t envision a single thing that, when developed & apparent, leads to such great benefit as the mind. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that is so very beneficial as this mind that is developed and manifested.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, bhāvitaṁ pātubhÅ«taṁ mahato atthāya saṁvattatÄ«ā€ti. The mind, when developed & apparent, leads to great benefit.ā€ A developed and manifested mind is very beneficial.ā€

Chaṭṭhaṁ.

Aṭṭhamaṁ.

ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ abhāvitaṁ abahulÄ«kataṁ dukkhādhivahaṁ hoti yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, cittaṁ. ā€œI don’t envision a single thing that, when undeveloped & uncultivated, brings about such suffering & stress as the mind. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that brings such suffering as this mind that is not developed and cultivated.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, abhāvitaṁ abahulÄ«kataṁ dukkhādhivahaṁ hotÄ«ā€ti. The mind, when undeveloped & uncultivated, brings about suffering & stress.ā€ An undeveloped and uncultivated mind brings suffering.ā€

Navamaṁ.

ā€œNāhaṁ, bhikkhave, aƱƱaṁ ekadhammampi samanupassāmi yaṁ evaṁ bhāvitaṁ bahulÄ«kataṁ sukhādhivahaṁ hoti yathayidaṁ, bhikkhave, cittaṁ. ā€œI don’t envision a single thing that, when developed & cultivated, brings about such happiness as the mind. ā€œMendicants, I do not see a single thing that brings such happiness as this mind that is developed and cultivated.

Cittaṁ, bhikkhave, bhāvitaṁ bahulÄ«kataṁ sukhādhivahaṁ hotÄ«ā€ti. The mind, when developed & cultivated, brings about happiness.ā€ A developed and cultivated mind brings happiness.ā€

Dasamaṁ.
